The girls of the Family Surf

It was our turn now. And my two daughters, Madison 12 and Peach 8 were not excited. I was pretty nervous too. Did our family need to be closer? Maybe being a bunch of beginner surfers would tear us a part. But my husband had his mind made up. We were all going to learn to surf.

How to start surfing

So of course the first thing you need is equipment. Big 5 in our town does not carry anything for surfing, so we hit the internet. I noticed right away how expensive everything was and my son is still growing. So before my husband could go crazy, I decided to check e-bay. E-bay was a lifesaver! And this is before craigslist, (also a must when surfing.) We got his first wetsuit and foam board on e-bay. Then we bought racks for our Ford Expedition and we were ready. The next step is where to go? This is the most important to my husband. When you live in Southern California and you have a beginner surfer, the place to go is of course, Doheny.
Griffin looked so cute in his wetsuit and my husband looked pretty good too. Oh yeah, did I mention I made Griffin wear a life jacket? First Kevin taught him how to get up on the board while it was on the sand and how to paddle with his arms and then they hit the water. Kevin was explaining waves come in sets but he would push Griffin onto the wave and he rode the first couple of waves in on his belly, but in no time he was standing. Kevin was cheering from the water and my daughters and I were cheering from the beach. Griffin had a smile from ear to ear. He was so proud. They had a great time and when they came out, Kevin said he had forgotten what a powerful feeling surfing and the ocean gives you. I was happy they had a great time until Kevin said,... This is exactly what our family needs to become closer and to tie us all together for the rest of our lives. What was he saying? Then he announced... WE are ALL getting surfboards and learning to surf.

My Son Loves Surfing

My son, Griffin started skateboarding at 4 years old and he was a natural, but after about a year, when his tricks started getting more challenging and his knees were permanently bloody, my husband thought he should try surfing because water is much softer than cement. I was not too keen on the idea because he could not really swim. Kevin (my husband) surfed for 10 years when he was 16, but when I met him at 30 his boards were pretty dusty. He assured me that the wetsuit floats and he can hold his breath, so he would be fine. So what do we do next? We don't live near the beach.
